Our History

Our hospitals

Our hospitals have been treating patients for over 160 years. From Royal Brompton's earliest days as a charitable hospital treating patients with consumption and chest diseases, to Harefield's beginnings as a hospital for ANZAC soldiers during World War I, we've always been leading the way with innovation and treatment.

Over the years, our experts have pioneered some of the most novel and groundbreaking treatments for heart and lung conditions - a tradition that continues to this day.

Consultants at Harefield hate developed an innovative programme using artificial hearts as a "bridge to recovery", using the device to help a patient's own heart recover to such an extent that a transplant is no longer necessary. The programme has been so successful that the Harefield protocol has been adopted by other centres across the world, particularly in America.

Our Cystic Fibrosis clinic was the first of its kind in Europe, and is still the largest dedicated centre. Over the last 45 years, life expectancy for CF has risen to the 40s, and advances that we're making are helping to push this even further.

Our Hospitals

Our charity

If you’ve ever set foot in our hospitals, you’ll have seen the benefit of our work – maybe without ever knowing it. Whether you’ve sat on a comfortable chair in Rose Ward, been to one of our lunchtime concerts, or undergone surgery with pioneering equipment, the charity’s work is reflected all around you.

We support the work of Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, the UK's leading specialist heart and lung centre. We treat patients from across the country, whose conditions are so complex that they can't be treated at their local hospitals. Our hospitals need to have the very best people and equipment to save lives when others cannot; to perfect techniques that will be copied around the world.

Whilst NHS funds ensure that our hospitals can provide an excellent service, this money can only go so far. Through the charity’s work, and the support of our donors and volunteer fundraisers, we’re able to fund items that really make a difference to our patients. Our support is concentrated in three key areas – state of the art medical equipment, world class patient-led research, and amenities to make our patients’ stays with us as comfortable as possible.
