The two new intensive care rooms that we’ve been raising money for through our Enhancing Critical Care Appeal are entering into a new exciting stage of construction this week. 

That’s the thing about supporting this Charity – if you do give, and there are so many ways you can support us, then your donation doesn’t just disappear into a great big pot of need.  It will have go directly towards building, buying, creating or enhancing.

We still have some way to go, and whatever you may do to support the adult intensive care rooms at Royal Brompton – your efforts and generosity will be put to great use. It could be the clever lighting, which will help patients get the rest they so need but will allow staff to see well enough to carry out their work. It could help to buy the special sofa bed, where a loved one will be able to stay close by during this anxious time. Perhaps your donation will go towards noise reduction, so that the patient is not disturbed by the comings and goings along the corridor. 

And often our donors tell us how they are raising the money to help with this pioneering project – from abseils, to bake offs, from buying Christmas cards and Great Brompton Quiz tickets to simply filling in a donation form – you are helping to build something truly spectacular and extraordinary for our patients, their families and the hospital staff. Now, that’s a nice thought to start the week.

Over at Harefield Hospital, it’s been a long journey to welcome the first patient to the new intensive care unit and scanner centre you helped us to build. But we now know that the first patients will be treated in this new building at the very beginning of next month.  It sounds so simple but one of the quiet revolutionary ways your support of this project will help patients, is to provide them with a view of the outside world as they recover.  Donors, like you, have helped us create a green space that will be the view from the windows and will feature plants that ensure there is colour to enjoy all year round – each day will bring something different to see.  And some of our patients do spend a long time in intensive care. This view will make their stays that little bit calmer.
