We were pleased to see that July’s “Fit for the future: 10 Year Health Plan for England”, published by the Department of Health and Social Care, includes a core focus on research and innovation across the three main shifts the government aims to deliver:
- hospital to community
- analogue to digital
- sickness to prevention
We hope that this focus will foster an environment where funding for research and innovation can continue to have greater and greater impact.
If these shifts are realised it should lead to more personalised care, earlier diagnosis and a reduced negative impact of treatment. We are already working with our hospital partners on these areas, which are existing strategic priorities for our Charity, and look forward to continuing to collaborate with them.
We have a strong history of supporting the delivery of earlier diagnosis for heart and lung patients, including our current focus on funding respiratory surgical robotics to support earlier lung cancer diagnosis. We’re also working to reduce negative effects of treatment, including supporting research at Royal Brompton Hospital’s Cardio-Oncology Centre of Excellence. This work focuses on lessening the impact of the inherent cardiotoxicity of cancer treatments and therapeutics, reducing negative side effects for patients. In addition, our funding of the clinical genetics and genomics laboratory at the Royal Brompton is helping develop a personalised approach to medicine and supporting more preventative care.
Our work is only possible with the generosity of our supporters. We look forward to continuing to work together to push the boundaries of heart and lung health, embracing and enabling research and innovation to change the future of care.
