Join us in raising £200,000 to help implement a new electronic observation system to provide the best possible care for our patients

Currently, our nurses record a patient’s vital signs on paper. Each vital sign is then allocated a score – the score is higher the more abnormal the vital sign, which nurses have to calculate manually.

But this new system will use a mobile device to support nursing staff in collecting patient observations by automatically calculating a score that will assist in making clinical judgments, revolutionising the way we deliver care at our hospitals.

What does this mean for patients?

  1. Standardisation of the assessment and response process - Care plans can be communicated quickly and easily across both sites
  2. Care at the right place and the right time - Automated alerts will ensure patients are seen to as soon as intervention is needed, by the appropriate clinician.
  3. Automated accuracy and calculations of the vital signs of a patient - Digital observations can help nurses calculate scores more promptly – resulting in improved patient outcomes.

Early warning technology for sepsis

There are around 250,000 cases of sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition, each year in the UK. Your support means our clinicians can identify early signs of patient deterioration and escalate the treatment of patients at risk of sepsis.

The right clinician can be alerted when a patient’s vitals indicate suspected sepsis, using algorithms and track-and-trigger systems alongside our nurses' own expertise, immediately reducing the risk of this dangerous condition.

How will nurses benefit?

Find out how Transforming Your Care will support the day-to-day role of our amazing nurses:

Tasmin Fernandes - Sister, Victoria Ward explains:

"The digital platform will allow nursing staff to spend more time with their patients, with even more focus on patient care.

The automated escalation means we can concentrate less on numbers and more on the patient and provide immediate care when needed."
