Our first ever RideLondon-Surrey team of cyclists did the Charity proud last Sunday as they collectively raked in over £6,000

The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey saw 27,000 amateur cyclists take on the gruelling 100 mile route, which winds from Stratford to the Surrey Hills and then back to London, finishing on Pall Mall. Among them were seven riders who were flying the flag, and raising a fantastic amount, for our hospitals.

Bob Merrill and William Gardiner got off to a rapid start, but were unfortunately caught up in a large tailback due to a serious accident. Despite the setback, the pair showed real dedication and walked for an hour and a half.

The duo raised a whopping £3,000 pounds for Charity. “We are very grateful for the support that so many have given us, for such a worthwhile cause,” they said.

Another member of our wonderful team, Mel Gore, was also held up by the unfortunate accident but she didn’t let that dampen her spirits or hard work: “I enjoyed the ride and did all I could. I have a lovely medal to show for my efforts!” Mel was riding in memory of her daughter’s friend Abby, who suffered from a rare lung disease and sadly passed away last year.

Tim Jackson, a clinical scientist who heads up the Royal Brompton’s perfusion department, swapped blood pumps for bicycle pumps as he set off on his journey. It took Tim 6 hours and 3 minutes to cycle the route, impressive given the huge delay, and he has so far raised a terrific £728.20.

Lucy Zecchin was raising money for the hospitals as a thank you to the staff who have treated her grandfather and father over the years.

She said of the day: “There was a great atmosphere. It was hard work but worth every minute. We have been overwhelmed as a family by the support we’ve received. I'm spending the day of the sofa today, ha!” And Lucy certainly deserves her rest. She has so far raised a fantastic £1,392 for our hospitals.
