Stepping up to support our NHS staff The second wave of Covid-19 saw a huge increase in admissions to Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals. Our staff were still feeling exhausted from the first wave and subsequent backlog from delayed routine operations. Thankfully an incredible community were there to support them. To everyone, from the big businesses to the home bakers, thank you for helping us to care for our staff while they care for everyone else. Patients and residents were the first to respond with cards and poems and cakes. Several individuals have been baking up a storm weekly to make sure our staff are fuelled. It was comforting for those working on the frontline to know people were still behind them. The hospitals are being supported by a host of community led initiatives who are delivering hot meals, drinks and snacks regularly. Thanks to them, lunch is one less thing to worry about in a busy day. We received deliveries of toiletries and hand creams to help our staff freshen up at the end of their day and soothe their hands. Companies like Burt’s Bees, Clarins and British Airways made very generous donations as a thank you to the NHS. Ellen Dunthorne and Ciara Collins, both critical care matrons at Harefield Hospital said; The support the Critical Care Unit has received from the community during both the first and second surge has been incredible. The endless food, drinks, cakes, soups, biscuits and meals has been amazing and has definitely kept us going and given us a sugar boost when we have been so tired. The generosity from the community is something we will never forget and has made us feel that we are not fighting this battle alone, we are all in this together. Thanks to the whole team in the charity and POPD who have made sure all of the gifts and treats have been shared out amongst all staff and made sure it got to the places that really needed that boost Colleagues are also helping each other out. Staff from departments across the Trust have been bringing in food donations to support those working in the hospitals' ICUs. A very generous donation from The Magdi Yacoub Institute which is located at Harefield Hospital was matched by skincare brand Nursem to provide our staff with tubes of hand-cream. The Magdi Yacoub Institute are aware of the great efforts of the clinical staff at Harefield Hopsital in dealing with COVID-19 patients and in maintaining a service to cardiac patients, during this these unprecedented times. They hope that the donation of funds to purchase hand creams for the staff will, in a small way help with the well-being of the staff throughout the hospital. On behalf of Prof Magdi Yacoub, the MYI Trustees and the team they thank the frontline for going above and beyond. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated and shown their support to our staff at both Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital. Thank you to our many wonderful supporters including...
