Want to make a difference to the lives of people facing complex heart and lung diseases?

Director of Finance and Grants

Are you a qualified accountant with experience leading a not-for-profit function?  Do you want to help create new possibilities for people with heart and lung diseases? If so, you could be the perfect candidate for our Director of Finance and Grants role.

We are a recruiting for a key member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), that can lead the Finance and Grant making functions of Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Charity, reporting directly into our CEO, Richard Bowyer.

The successful candidate will ensure the charity is run on sound financial principles, that strategic and financial decisions are based on detailed evidence, and that the impact of our grant-making on beneficiaries’ live is maximised.

They will be an integral part of the SLT, and work across the organisation, with trustees, and external stakeholders, on all financial matters.

The Director of Finance and Grants will oversee all aspects of the finance and grant functions including:

  • Leading the finance function for the charity – with £9m annual income and £130m in strategic reserves.
  • Handling charity annual statutory accounts, working with auditors, owning policies and processes, and acting as budget holder.
  • Developing & monitoring the grants strategy, recommending projects for funding, and assessing the impact of grant funding.
  • Overseeing the annual business planning and budgeting process and providing insightful financial reporting to aid strategic decision making.
  • Working closely with our advisers to monitor the charity’s investments and make recommendations to trustees on investment decisions and strategy.
  • Overseeing the smooth running of the charity’s governance functions, including owning the charity risk register and acting as the Company Secretary.
  • Providing exceptional leadership to three team members, contributing to the SLT, and deputising for the CEO as needed.

We are looking for someone that:

  • Is a qualified accountant, with experience leading the finance function (as a Finance Director, Head of Finance, Financial Controller etc) of a not-for-profit organisation, including directly compiling statutory accounts.
  • Has experience influencing organisational strategy, with a highly analytical and data driven approach
  • Can lead and inspire teams, develop strong relationships with stakeholders and effectively communicate financial information to all types of people.

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Previous experience of grant making, overseeing substantial investments, handling charity governance issues, and fulfilling company secretary duties.
  • A demonstrable understanding of the healthcare context – including the political context and the innovation / research environment, and best practice in grant effectiveness evaluation.
  • A qualification in philanthropy or grant-making (or related discipline).

Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Charity exists to create new possibilities for people with heart and lung diseases. Working closely with Royal Brompton & Harefield hospitals, we fund life-changing projects to expand medical understanding and find innovative treatment options; to renew and upgrade equipment; and improve the everyday experience of patients and staff alike.

Charity employees are entitled to a range of benefits including 27 days of holiday (excluding bank holidays), an employee assistance scheme, enhanced pension contributions, and a cross-charity annual bonus. We are a hybrid working organisation, with a requirement to be office-based at least two days a week, at one of our three sits in London.
